How can we translate this into some legit effort to get this video taken down and an apology issued? Make videos, flood Facebook, send letters to Florence and her label?

This is the second time she’s pulled shit like this, but this is by far the grossest black face I’ve seen in the present day. I can’t believe she thought this was OK, and that her fans do, too.

I am sorry you don’t understand anything from her videos, honestly, but from that to calling her racist is a long way, dude. You clearly have no life if you’d dedicate your time to, what, making videos and sending letters to Florence, as if you could change her ideas about the world. 

“No light, no light” is not about you. It’s about her. And if she wanted to make it that way, it’s her own fucking business. It’s not her fault you’re an uneducated monkey and can’t read between the lines.

You don’t care if pop artists objectify women, for instance, you couldn’t be bothered to do something to stop that, but suddenly everyone wants to protect black people. YES, IT IS WRONG TO BE RACIST, fine, whatever, but keep in mind people also have other rights, one of them being the freedom of the media. Black people weren’t the only ones suppressed along the years and I believe racism should not be our main concern, especially when it comes to a music video. It’s a fucking music video and, truth be told, you are not forced to watch/enjoy it.  

Ahh, the uppity uneducated nigger argument yet again (though to be fair, you called me a monkey, didn’t you?)! My lived experience and the fact that voodoo is practiced within the Caribbean communities from which I was born and raised in means nothing, because this white woman is an artist! (Art has no history of racism or a White Western bias)! I dig your perspective, though. I’m glad you’re here to tell me to defer to your great white wisdom, to stop being so uptight about a vastly repulsive misconstruing, twisted, appropriating, and demonizing of my identity and culture and focus on more important things like how ARTISTIC it really was! It wasn’t about me after all, even if it stole from me and effects me by playing into really repulsive and age old stereotypes! So sorry!

In the end, maybe you’re right. I mean, there isn’t a long history of black men being seen as savage monsters preying on white women. (while on the other hand, even though the debasement, rape, and assault of black women by white men was common, not one rape was prosecuted from 1860-1960! Racialization of people based on race is a myth!)

I mean, what is racism in the current day anyways? So what if every conceivable institution still has a strong anti-black bias? So what if there’s still a black and white gap when it comes to income and education? So what about a history of subjugation and slavery? So what about internalized cultural and social racism that manifests itself in many ways, including pop culture and music? We need to focus on more IMPORTANT things! Ahh, I’m too much of a monkey to know these things. *sob* My lived experience and a history of white supremacy and subjugation=NOTHING TO YOUR WHITE WISDOM!

Oh, also it’s cool to assume I’m not a well-seasoned outspoken feminist, nope, I  just don’t care about depictions of women by our pop culture at all, I’m just needless focused on all that racial stuff (Oppression Olympics ya’ll! Sexism is much more important than racism!). Also, there is NO way that I, as an Afro-Latina woman, could possibly even be interested in the intersection of racism and sexism, being that women of color are stereotyped (the Jezebel, the spicy Latina, the submissive Asian woman) in ways that are actually very dangerous to their livelihood.

Right of the media and freedom of speech means that you can’t be racist (because merely having the freedom to say what you want means what you have the freedom to say cannot be bigoted or wrong), of course! It was so bad that in my initial post I made it my goal to attack her freedom as opposed to practice my right of speech to protest her racism and bigotry and ask her to rightfully take it down! I should know that her Freedom of Speech also means no one has the right to call people out or to protest what they put out! It goes unchallenged completely!
